A career highlight case: on appeal to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, Brouwer preserved summary judgment for an employer in a hostile work environment case, arguing the plaintiff was judicially estopped from proceeding with her claim because she failed to list that claim in her Ch. 13 bankruptcy. The plaintiff argued to the Supreme Court that the law on judicial estoppel should be changed; after receiving Brouwer’s opposition brief, the Supreme Court declined to take the case, keeping current law intact and having a favorable impact on her client.
A prolific volunteer, Brouwer is a past president of the Michigan Defense Trial Counsel; Member, State Bar of Michigan, ABA, DRI and Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society. She is Secretary (and former Chair) of the Board of Directors of Assured Family Services, which provides mental health services in juvenile justice/child welfare systems; and former Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation, which serves Michigan’s aging population through culture, arts and social services. Active in the National Association of Woman-Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF), Brouwer is a career-long role model for female litigators and a change agent for women in the profession.
